As one of the few semi-regular contributors to this group,
I thought I ought to mention that my ISP is dropping Usenet
-- in a few days, I think. So I may not be here after that...

This group has been interesting to subscribe to, despite (or maybe
because) of tne low traffic, but I've wasted *major* time in wading
through some groups!

So I may decide that it's worth registering with another service,
or maybe not. We'll see.

Cheers, anyway.

Hello, and if you don't need binaries, a freebie public server that
allows posting is nntp.aioe.org Sincerely,

I saw the correction! Sorry 'bout that.]

Thanks, yes. If I do decide to continue I guess it'll be with them
or eternal september. Unfortunately they're troll havens, but...

My ISP uses (and is dropping) Giganews, but their cheapest rate is
$5/month, which is more than it's worth to me.

With aioe, I suppose I lose access to alt.binaries.music.midi, which
is nice to browse occasionally, but maybe it's not that important.

My ISP doesn't offer usenet and I was going to suggest aioe.org but
somebody already did. Using Agent you can use multiple usenet
providers such as aioe.org and freenews.net and the e-mail is much
better than the one with explorer.

I should point out this Usenet group is available free through google groups.

...With one of the more unuseable interfaces around! (:-))
But, yeah, if all else fails I might occasionally browse through them.

Oohhh... a loss looms :-(

I really regret this (slow) erosion of the nntp infrastructure,
which does exactly what's needed, and its replacement by dozens
of corporate websites. But what can you do ?

Indeed :-)

I might have to post some pending queries over the next day or two...

Thanks for the appreciation... (:-))

I suspect I'll probably look into aioe or something eventually,
but ATM I seem to be suffering a perfect storm! Tax time is
proving a real pain this year. [Don't know what it's like in
Australia, but the US tax system is baroque! (Personally I'd
say plain 'baroken' (:-/)] And I've recently found that I'm
going to have to build myself a home website/mailserver!
No relation to the usenet loss -- my friend who has been
providing the service for several years has decided to call
it quits. Website is easy -- I've had a dummy one for a while --
but I'm still trying to get mail wrinkles smoothed before I
have to switch over.

Agreed. Usenet does have long-standing problems, though -- aside
from nobody even knowing about it! Trolling on many groups is at
an amazing level -- even this one is hit by "Ras Enoch" far too
often. And there are way, way too many groups, with lots of
duplicates. Why both 'comp.music.midi' and 'alt.music.midi'?
Whenever I've wanted to find a useful group on a particular topic,
it's been a tedious slog through endless irrelevant groups that
come up in the search.

Mailing lists and forums have their own problems, though. I resist
joining either -- mail-lists so I don't get swamped, and forums because
I get lost!

Cheers,

Well, I dunno... (:-/) The announcement (on my ISP's blog)
said "End of the month", and I seem to be still here!

The thing is, I'm not even sure *which* month! The blog entry
is undated, but as I read it in March, I assumed that was the
'month' referred to. Maybe the notice has been there for longer
-- I don't usually read that page -- and they changed their minds
without bothering to say so.

I guess we'll see.
